The Week That Was #440

1. The Guardian press play on Cardiff Music City Festival

Cardiff’s biggest-ever music celebration kicked off in the capital last Friday as the Cardiff Music City Festival opened with electronic music legends Leftfield and Orbital headlining the Utilita Arena. We’ve been working with Cardiff Council to reveal the scale of events that are taking place across the city – which also encompasses next week’s Llais Festival, the Welsh Music Prize and Swn Festival later in the month. There’s also a cascade of concerts, inventive pop ups, secret gigs and immersive music and arts events. This week we worked with The Guardian on a story previewing all the festival has to offer and the revival of Cardiff’s music city status. The buzz has been building across social, and there has been coverage on Nation.Cymru, with a celebration on S4C’s Heno, among other media channels. Head to the Cardiff Music City website and socials for your tickets and all the latest news.

2. The Homeless World Cup concludes in spectacular style in Seoul

Last weekend the Homeless World Cup reached its finale in Seoul, with wins for both the Mexican men’s and women’s teams. The Mexico men’s team defeated England 6-5 with a goal in the dying seconds to win in a frantic spectacle that will live long in the memory. And in the women’s event Mexico defeated Romania to win an unprecedented ninth title on the bounce. Our MD Dan Tyte was on the ground throughout the tournament, in an experience he described as ‘a brilliant blur of humanity in the Korean heat, people from 40+ countries on the up after tricky times, football bringing them together regardless of language or circumstance.’ WHAT A WEEK, bring on 2025!

3. Disability activist Bethany Handley takes on the Wales Coast Path

“As we drive back to our hotel near the medieval walled town of Conwy, the sky is stained red and the River Conwy is ablaze, framed by the 13th century castle’s turrets. We stop to watch the sunset, considering how this trip has removed the limits we have placed on our adventures after I became a wheelchair user. We had not dared to dream that sections of Wales Coast Path could be so accessible. As we pick the next section of Wales Coast Path to scout out, our appetite for exploring is reignited with the sunset.”

These are the words of writer, poet and disability activist Bethany Handley, who is a passionate advocate of raising awareness of the physical and attitudinal barriers the most marginalised in our society face when accessing the outdoors. With this in mind we invited Bethany to experience an accessible trip along a stretch of the Wales Coast Path in north Wales. Read her words in Country Living.

5. Promoting Wales’ life science sector to Germany

Next month, several Welsh life sciences businesses will be joining the Welsh Government at MEDICA – an international medical trade fair in Düsseldorf, Germany – to explore potential export partnerships. To increase their chances of returning to Wales with a deal under their belt, we created a film for Business Wales encouraging potential clients, distributors and other partners in market to get in touch and arrange meetings with these Welsh firms while they’re in Düsseldorf. The film will be promoted across LinkedIn as part of a digital advertising campaign targeted at business representatives in Germany.
