The Week That Was #443

1. Bagging gold at the BAFTAs

It was lights, camera, action for the Working Word team last Sunday as months of planning and prep came together at the 2024 BAFTA Cymru Awards. We managed press and media on the red carpet and backstage at the awards, securing interviews for household names Philip Glenister, Mark Lews-Jones, Alexandra Roach and Annes Elwy. We achieved coverage for the awards across UK and Welsh media including Radio Times, Screen magazine, Radio Wales, Radio Cymru and Heno as well as a showstopping feature on film and TV production in Wales in The Guardian ahead of the ceremony.

2. Winter is the new summer in Conwy

Mirror, mirror on the wall, which is the most magical Welsh town of them all? the verdict’s in, and it’s Conwy. We’ve been working with Visit Conwy to promote the county’s winter offering and encourage off-season travel to the area as trends show increased interest in winter weekend getaways. The Mirror jumped at the opportunity to explore the ancient town during the crisp weather of October, discovering its compelling history and renowned culinary offering, to its incredible  landscapes. We worked with Visit Conwy to create a bespoke itinerary for Jane at The Mirror, who loved it so much that’s she’s writing not one, but three different features on the area. Check out the first one online now, and keep your eyes peeled for a spooky Halloween review coming soon.

3. Cardiff Music City Festival makes an outro

A three-week long celebration of music in the Welsh capital came to an end as Cardiff Music City Festival left the stage for 2024. We’ve been part of the team pricking ears and building interest in the media long before the festival began and it’s been wonderful joining in the party once it got underway. Festival highlights included the Welsh Music Prize, Sŵn and Llais Festivals, a mysterious black box in Central Square, the enigmatic Lauryn Hill at the Utilita Arena and a homecoming for a Cardiff-born hero. You can catch our hands at work with coverage on individual aspects of the festival everywhere from the Guardian to NME on Cardiff’s burgeoning music scene across Welsh and UK media.

4. A fiery end to October at The Dragon’s Breath

Over the last month, we’ve been working with our client, the National Botanic Garden of Wales, to maximise awareness and drive ticket sales for their brand-new event, The Dragon’s Breath, an immersive night-time experience that combines fire, folklore and fantasy and which is taking place this weekend (24-27th October). We’ve been promoting news of the event via a wide array of influencer partnerships, as well as traditional media channels, and on Wednesday night we were there to welcome media (ITV did a live from the gardens during Wales at Six), as well as digital creators including the Visit Wales social team. The official event launch took place on Thursday evening, where we were again on hand to welcome a large number of influencers who we’d invited to capture content and drive online engagement. Pick up tickets for the remaining performances here.

5. £50m milestone for Start Up Loans

Over £50m worth of funding has supported almost 5,000 smaller businesses in Wales thanks to the British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme. Some of the Welsh businesses who’ve recently received support include: Melin Llynon, Wales’ last working windmill turned bakery; We Make Footballers, a franchised football academy in Cardiff; and Tŷ Green, an eco-hut business. This week we shared the milestone with Welsh business media, as well as announcing significant funding milestones for Start Up Loans in Pembrokeshire and Denbighshire with £2m and £1m worth of funding, respectively. Read more about the impact of the Start Up Loans programme on Business News Wales, Wales Business Insider, Wales 247 and more.
