The Week That Was #446

1. Helping Welsh women find their #Mumentum

New data shows that nearly two thirds of mums want to retrain for a new career, but barriers such as money and time hold them back. The Open University is addressing these worries with its ‘Mumentum’ campaign, an initiative designed to empower mums who are motivated to retrain after having children. We worked to get the word out about the opportunities that the Open University in Wales offers mums who want to get to progress their careers – including funding, flexible learning options, and personal support and secured media coverage in Skills.Wales and Business News Wales.

2. Wales takes its place on the global medtech stage at MEDICA

This week MEDICA, the international trade fair for medical technology and healthcare, took place in Dusseldorf. It was attended by Rebecca Evans MS, Welsh Government Cabinet Secretary for Economy, Energy and Planning, in her first overseas visit since assuming her new role. She was there alongside a large group of representatives from Wales’ export-focused life sciences sector, which employs more than 13,300 people in over 300 sites, with an approximate turnover of £2.85bn. The delegation included many Welsh companies doing impressive work internationally, like Newtown-based CellPath, which specialises in the manufacture and supply of equipment and services used in cancer diagnostics and Cardiff-based Health & Her, who retail a range of supplements to help women as they experience hormonal changes. With all of this in mind we worked with the Cabinet Secretary to pen an op-ed for WalesOnline, which was published on MEDICA’s first day, Monday.

3. Flour

power: rising to the eco-challenge with Rosa’s Bakery

To coincide with COP 29, we teamed up with British Business Bank to celebrate the sustainability journey of Neath-based Rosa’s Bakery. You’ll regularly see queues outside the door for the Romanian-inspired delicacies from teenage head baker Rosa Cundill and her family. The bakery has introduced environmentally-friendly preparation methods including evaporative cooling to their baking process. The Cundill family also supports greener farming methods and uses ingredients that have been grown with minimal inputs and no artificial fertilisers or pesticides.

Since opening last spring, with support from British Business Bank’s Start Up Loans programme, Rosa’s brother Reuben has introduced delivery by e-bike and the family will expand their offering further when their organic deli and food hall opens early next year on a nearby vacant site. The South Wales Evening Post and Business News Wales were keen to share the story.

4. Designs to bring Wales’ new qualifications to life

New national 14-16 qualifications are set to support the Curriculum for Wales and meet the needs of learners and the Welsh economy. This week, Qualifications Wales has published a comprehensive guide to support centres in Wales with their transition to the new qualifications. This includes a full social media toolkit featuring designs, animations, and materials designed by the creative minds at Working Word. So, if you’re interested in finding out what the new courses and assessments will offer your children or students, Qualifications Wales’ channels on Facebook, X, Instagram and LinkedIn, have the answers you need.

5. Getting family-ar with Conwy

With temperatures set to drop next week, it’s the perfect time to continue our ongoing winter tourism campaign for Visit Conwy.  Our campaign has involved organising a series of press and influencer trips, which are taking place every week throughout October and November. This week saw the turn of family of five – @goingonanadventureblog from Manchester, led by super mum Colette. The fantastic five experienced lots of the family-friendly winter activities available in Conwy, from thrilling adventures at Zip World, to exploring the stunning beaches and breathtaking natural wonders of the region like Swallow Falls. Check out some of their trip content on the @goingonanadventureblog Instagram account.
